Love, Leo, and Loss

We welcomed Leo, a darling 10 week old silky terrier into our home when the kids were in jr. high and high school. He was everything a dog should be: Lovable, loyal, adventurous, mischievous, fun, and funny. The kids adored him, and the neighborhood littles would knock on our door to see if “Leo could play”. Even when he was older, they still loved to throw the ball for him; and oh how he loved to retrieve that ball. Over and over again. Always healthy, never sick until he was 12.5 years old. On Christmas eve we noticed he was losing weight. I took him to the vet right away, and they seemed worried. They wanted to do an ultrasound and my heart sank. The unthinkable “C” word came up. We were all in shock, and it put a damper on our holiday. We took him to Dove Lewis for an exploratory surgery as he had a thickening in his intestine. The Dr., at first said it didn’t look too bad and she was optimistic. When the results came back positive for intestinal “C” we were heartbroken to say the least. I write this because it is part of our story, Love, and loss go hand in hand. We all know dogs don’t live long enough and so we loved on him and loved on him until it was time for him to cross over the rainbow bridge. We had a big brunch, and Leo got bacon and we all held him as he passed. I still cannot think about it without tears in my eyes. But, we have the memories of a dog that was a part of our lives, our hearts, our family and our story. We miss Leo – and we cherish his memory – always!!!
